Nesta época do ano, toda a atenção se volta para a colheita nos laranjais do centro-oeste de São Paulo. Na fazenda de Ismael Boiani, no município de Iacanga (SP), encontramos 90 mil pés em 200 hectares.
A região é uma das principais produtoras de citros do Brasil, mas a safra atual não será tão grande quanto a do ano anterior. É o que aponta um levantamento do Fundo de Defesa da Citricultura (Fundecitrus).
A safra 2020/2021 deve ser de 287,76 milhões de caixas de 40,8 quilos no cinturão agrícola formado pelo estado de São Paulo e pelo Triângulo Mineiro. O número representa uma redução de 25%.
Se por um lado a safra será menor, por outro o aumento do interesse pela laranja ajuda. O consumo de suco vem aumentando durante a pandemia.

O engenheiro agrônomo Frauzo Sanches, que também é produtor de laranja, diz que o principal comprador do suco brasileiro é o mercado europeu, que registrou um aumento de cerca de 25% nas exportações.
Devido ao clima, a fruta não está totalmente madura no pé e vai precisar ser colhida em três fases. A laranja verde deve demorar ainda três meses para ficar no ponto. As menores estão previstas para o fim do ano.
Na fazenda, são 20 funcionários, além de 30 colhedores terceirizados. O pomar tem rendido até três caixas de laranja em cada árvore. São aproximadamente 40 toneladas por hectare.
