Milhões de caranguejos vermelhos estão invadindo estradas e cruzando pontes construídas especialmente para eles em sua temporada anual de migração na Ilha Christmas, na Austrália (assista acima).
As impressionantes multidões de crustáceos saem de vários pontos da ilha e marcham em direção ao oceano para acasalar e deixar suas ovas, em um evento que é a maior atração turística da ilha.
Segundo o Departamento de Parques da Austrália, a migração começa com as primeiras chuvas da estação chuvosa. Isso geralmente ocorre em outubro ou novembro, mas ocasionalmente pode acontecer no final de dezembro ou janeiro.

O momento exato e a velocidade da migração são determinados pela fase da lua. Os caranguejos vermelhos sempre desovam antes do amanhecer em uma maré alta recuante, durante o último quarto da lua. Os especialistas observam que os animais acertam exatamente a fase lunar, embora não se saiba explicar como.
Durante a migração, funcionários do Departamento de Parques têm o trabalho extra de tentar evitar que os animais sejam atropelados, embora diversas estradas sejam bloqueadas para veículos parcial ou totalmente, por horas ou mesmo dias inteiros.

Além disso, estruturas de travessia foram construídas para que eles possam cruzar vias sem correr riscos.
