A passagem do furacão Sally nos Estados Unidos matou uma pessoa e deixou outra desaparecida nesta quarta-feira (16) no Alabama, disse o prefeito Tony Kennon, de Orange Beach. Outras centenas de moradores da região precisaram de resgate.
Orange Beach, na costa sul dos EUA, sofreu com inundações dos canais que cortam os bairros da cidade. Segundo o prefeito, os danos foram piores do que o furacão Ivan, que passou pela região há pouco mais de duas semanas.

O país está em alerta porque há cinco tempestades tropicais ao mesmo tempo passando pelo Golfo do México (leia mais adiante sobre a temporada de furacões).
Além do Alabama, a Flórida se prepara para os efeitos do furacão — o governador do estado, Ron DeSantis disse que chuvas fortes e inundações estão previstas para o interior do estado nos próximos dias. Em Pensacola, ruas inteiras ficaram alagadas.

O furacão Sally tocou o solo do Alabama nesta manhã. O Centro Nacional de Furacões (NHC, na sigla em inglês) informou às 6h45 de Brasília que o fenômeno, de categoria 2 em uma escala até 5, registra ventos de até 165 quilômetros por hora.
Quase 75 mil casas no Alabama e Flórida estavam sem energia elétrica na terça-feira à noite, de acordo com o Weather Channel. Alguns vídeos publicados nas redes sociais pareciam mostrar algumas áreas já inundadas.

Foram tantas as tempestades tropicais no Atlântico este ano que a Organização Meteorológica Mundial da ONU, responsável por nomear os fenômenos, está prestes a ficar sem nomes pela segunda vez na história. A última vez foi em 2005, ano em que o furacão Katrina devastou Nova Orleans.

Além de Sally estão em atividade o furacão Paulette, as tempestades tropicais Teddy e Vicky e a depressão tropical Rene.
Paulette atingiu a ilha de Bermudas na segunda-feira com ventos de categoria 2 e fortes chuvas, segundo o NHC. O centro prevê que a tempestade tropical Teddy, atualmente no meio do Atlântico, se tornará um furacão.
