A produção de alimentos como hortaliças mudou muito com o plantio hidropônico, que usa uma espécie de água adubada, sem uso do solo. Um projeto de plantação na Zona Rural de Santana, no interior do Amapá, aplica essa técnica para colher alface e tomate.
O programa Amapá Rural, da Rede Amazônica, foi conhecer a iniciativa comandada pelo engenheiro agrônomo Francisco Figueira. Os viveiros ficam próximos à Comunidade do Anauerapucu, numa das margens da Rodovia AP-010.

O plantio ocorre em uma área coberta e cercada por telas para evitar pragas. Dentro não tem insetos e, como tudo é suspenso, sem o contato com o chão, o índice é zero de ataques.
A hidroponia é uma técnica onde as plantas são cultivadas sem o solo, somente usando a água que recebe um adubo líquido, com nutrientes para a planta, como fósforo, potássio, cálcio, magnésio.

A solução é balanceada e a água pode reutilizada por até 15 dias. A temperatura é totalmente controlada dentro do viveiro, para evitar a morte do plantio, com a queima da raiz do pé de alface.
Uma das vantagens de plantar alface é que o plantio ocorre em um período bem curto, onde em aproximadamente 50 dias já é possível colher o produto para vender no mercado local.
A meta é produzir 5 mil pés de alface por mês para fornecer ao mercado local.
Intenção é que tomateiros produzam mais de 8 mil tomates em até 150 dias

Já com o objetivo de colher tomates, a técnica usada é semi-hidropônica. O plantio em uma estufa evita, por exemplo, que a chuva caia diretamente na planta e a folha fica bem seca, o que evita inclusive o ataque de pragas. A produtividade na água é muito maior que diretamente na terra. A meta, com 800 pés de tomate, colher 8 mil frutos no prazo de até 150 dias.
