O serviço europeu Copernicus sobre mudanças climáticas anunciou, nesta quinta-feira (13), que um iceberg de mais de 300 Km², tamanho aproximado da área da cidade de Belo Horizonte, se soltou na Antártica.
Nas imagens capturas pela agência ao longo da última semana é possível observa a rapidez com que o grande pedaço de gelo se desprende.

Este é mais um dos indícios apontados por cientistas, no início de 2020, que demonstram o aquecimento global. Em entrevista para a CNN, Mark Drinkwater, do Centro de Observação da Terra da Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA) disse que as imagens deixam claro que a Geleira da ilha Pine está respondendo dramaticamente às mudanças climáticas.

Drinkwater afirma, ainda, que apesar do processo de derretimento ser natural, a taxa observada na Antártida Ocidental é maior do que qualquer época observada no registro de satélite.
Segundo ele, há um desequilíbrio no sistema glacial, afetado pelas temperaturas mais quentes das águas do oceano e da diminuição de nevascas. Esse desequilíbrio não permitiu que algumas geleiras se recuperassem.
No Twiter da Copernicus é possível observar o histórico de imagens feito pelos satélites da ESA, que capturou rachaduras aparecendo e “rapidamente” crescendo ao longo dos dias.

Fevereiro de 2010 – O iceberg B09B, de cerca de 100 km2, se deslocou até a Baía Commonwealth, no leste da Antártica. O deslocamento deste Iceberg provocou a morte de 150 mil pinguins.
Julho de 2017: com 11.000 km², 4 vezes o tamanho de Manhattan, o A68 é até hoje considerado o maior iceberg do mundo, imagens mostram que em breve ele chegará no oceano.
Setembro de 2019: Com 1.636 km² – um pouco maior que a cidade de São Paulo – o D28 se soltou da plataforma de gelo Amery.
