Espécies foram encontradas por pesquisadores na área do Projeto de Assentamento Rio Pardo, na BR-174. Três novas espécies de maruins foram descritas e ilustradas pelos pesquisadores do ILMD/Fiocruz Amazônia.

Três novas espécies de maruins (Atrichopogon), também chamados de mosquito-pólvora e mosquito do mangue, foram identificadas por pesquisadores do Instituto Leônidas & Maria Deane, vinculado à Fiocruz Amazônia. Os achados se deram próximo a Presidente Figueiredo, município distante 128 km de Manaus.
As novas espécies foram encontradas por pesquisadores do instituto, na área do Projeto de Assentamento Rio Pardo, que fica na BR-174. No local funciona uma base de apoio às pesquisas da Fiocruz Amazônia.
O artigo com a descoberta recebeu o título “Description of three new species of biting midge of the genus Atrichopogon Kieffer (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from Brazilian Amazon” e foi publicado recentemente pelo periódico científico Zootaxa. Tem como autores os pesquisadores Emanuelle de Sousa Farias, Sanmya Silva dos Santos, Jokebede Melynda dos Santos Paulino-Rosa, e Felipe Arley Costa Pessoa.
As três novas espécies de maruins foram descritas e ilustradas pelos pesquisadores e receberam destes os nomes de “Atrichopogon janseni sp. nov.”, “A. riopardensis sp. nov.” e “A. sergioluzi sp. nov.”. Os nomes foram escolhidos em homenagens a pesquisadores entomólogos que atuam na Amazônia e à população da comunidade de Rio Pardo, que fica em Presidente Figueiredo.

Outras espécies descobertas
Um dos pesquisadores responsáveis pela descoberta, Felipe Pessoa, trabalha com maruins no Rio Pardo desde 2014. Ele contou que, na localidade, já foram identificadas 89 espécies. Segundo ele, a diversidade das espécies já descobertas é considerada alta.
“A família que se incluem os maruins, Ceratopogonidae, é grande e bem diversa, quase todos sugam sangue de vertebrados, ou sangue de invertebrados. Alguns ao sugar sangue de outros insetos, acabam matando, sendo assim, considerados predadores. Vários gêneros de maruins predadores inclusive atacam maruins sugadores de sangue”, explicou o pesquisador.
Felipe Pessoa alerta que o controle de maruins é mais difícil que os de mosquitos, já que podem usar outros criadouros, além de corpos aquáticos, como solo bem úmido, troncos de bananeira e esterco seco de gado.
“São muito atraídos por animais domésticos, então, manter afastados plantações de bananeiras, currais e galinheiros, portanto, borrifar inseticida no terreiro e usar repelentes são formas tradicionais de combate”.
A pesquisa recebeu apoio do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) e da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas (Fapeam).
