Centenas de elefantes que morreram misteriosamente no famoso delta do Okavango em Botsuana sucumbiram provavelmente por causa de toxinas naturais, informou o Departamento de fauna silvestre nesta sexta-feira (31).
O país do sul africano tem a maior população de elefantes, calculada em torno de 130 mil, e aproximadamente 300 foram mortos desde março.
As autoridades já descartam que as causas estejam relacionadas com antrax ou a caça furtiva, pois as presas dos paquidermes permaneceram intactas.
Provas preliminares realizadas em vários países não tem sido conclusivas e outras mais estão em andamento, afirmou à AFP o chefe do Departamento da fauna silvestre e parques, Cyril Taolo, em entrevista telefônica.
“Mas com base em alguns resultados preliminares que temos recebido, estamos pensando que a causa provável são as toxinas naturais”, informou.
“Até agora não temos estabelecido uma conclusão sobre qual é a causa da mortalidade”, indicou.
Ele explicou que algumas bactérias podem produzir veneno naturalmente, especialmente em águas paradas.
O governo já registrou que 281 elefantes morreram, apesar de que organizações conservacionistas indicam que o número de mortes já superou os 350.
As mortes foram declaradas primeiro pela organização de conservação da vida silvestre Elephants Without Borders (EWB), cujo o relatório confidencial sobre 356 elefantes mortos foi divulgado no começo de julho.
EWB suspeitou que os elefantes estavam morrendo em uma determinada área há quase três meses, e que a mortalidade não estava relacionada com a idade ou o sexo dos animais.
Alguns elefantes vivos estão debilitados, letárgicos e magros, e outros mostram sinais de desorientação, dificuldade para caminhar o estão mancos, informou a EWB.
Exames estão sendo realizados por laboratórios especializados na África do Sul, Canadá, Zimbábue e os Estados Unidos.
