Um terremoto de magnitude 5,8 atingiu a costa oeste dos Estados Unidos nesta quarta-feira (24). De acordo com o Serviço Geológico dos EUA (USGS), o tremor aconteceu por volta das 10:40 da manhã (14:40 em Brasília), com o epicentro próximo à cidade de Lone Pine, a 300 km de Los Angeles.
O abalo sísmico foi registrado a uma profundidade de 6 km e foi sentido nas cidades de Fresno e Bakersfield, no centro do Estado. O tremor da Califórnia aconteceu apenas um dia depois do forte terremoto de magnitude 7,4 que atingiu a costa sul do México e deixou ao menos seis mortos no estado de Oaxaca.
Não há relatos imediatos de feridos ou de maiores danos.

O epicentro do terremoto está a cerca de 20 km a sudeste da cidade de Lone Pine, no condado de Inyo e, de acordo com o USGS a cidade com pouco mais de 1,8 mil habitantes, sentiu tremores “muito fortes”.
Segundo o jornal “Los Angeles Times”, a mesma região passou por um terremoto de magnitude 4,6 há dois dias e o tremor menos forte agora é considerado um “foreshock”, ou abalo que antecede um terremoto ainda maior.
Tremor no México
Um forte terremoto de magnitude 7,4 atingiu a costa sul do México na terça-feira (23), de acordo com o Serviço Geológico dos Estados Unidos (USGS). O número de mortos pelo terremoto que atingiu a região sul de Oaxaca no México chegou a seis, segundo uma atualização defesa civil mexicana nesta quarta.
O abalo chegou a ser sentido no centro da capital do país, a Cidade do México, que está a centenas de quilômetros de distância do epicentro. O tremor chegou a fazer soar os alertas de autoridades para a possibilidade de tsunami na costa do Pacífico, mas os alarmes foram retirados.
Inicialmente, o USGS tinha informado uma magnitude de 7,7 que foi revisada. Ainda assim, tremores deste tipo provocam estragos e, segundo o Serviço Geológico dos EUA, a proximidade deste tremor com a superfície amplifica seus efeitos.
