A esperanças de que o aumento das temperaturas globais médias fosse limitado a 2,5 graus Celsius até 2020 podem ser praticamente descartadas se as emissões de gases do efeito estufa continuarem no ritmo atual, apontou uma nova pesquisa, que reavaliou a sensibilidade da atmosfera terrestre ao dióxido de carbono.
O estudo, realizado com apoio o Programa Mundial de Pesquisa Climática sediado em Genebra, traz o primeiro avanço claro em décadas para se estreitar a faixa de elevação de temperatura causada pela duplicação dos níveis de CO2 desde os tempos pré-industriais.
Suas descobertas mostram que a duplicação desencadearia um aquecimento médio de 2,6ºC a 4,1ºC acima dos tempos pré-industriais, o que colocaria o menor aumento mais de 1 grau acima da média estimada previamente pelos cientistas — entre 1,5ºC e 4,5ºC.
“Para colocar isso em perspectiva, com nossa taxa atual de emissões, estamos a caminho de duplicar o CO2 até cerca de 2080”, disse o coautor Zeke Hausfather, cientista climático do Instituto Breakthrough, um centro de pesquisa em Oakland, no Estado norte-americano da Califórnia.
“A mudança climática é mais ou menos tão ruim quanto pensávamos que fosse”.
O consenso científico é o de que a meta de estabelecer um teto para o aumento das temperaturas globais médias em 1,5ºC, como defendido no acordo climático de Paris de 2015, estará quase certamente fora de alcance a menos que as taxas de emissões de gases de efeito estufa caiam.
Parâmetro de sensibilidade climática
Conhecida como parâmetro de sensibilidade climática, a duplicação das concentrações de CO2 é uma constante dos modelos de temperaturas globais futuras desde o final dos anos 1970.
O estudo, publicado na quarta-feira (22) no periódico científico “Reviews of Geophysics”, se baseou em simulações de computador que usaram observações de satélite, registros históricos de temperaturas e indícios de temperaturas pré-históricas de fontes como anéis de árvores.
A pesquisa oferece “uma noção melhor do quanto exatamente a Terra aquecerá à medida que o CO2 aumenta na atmosfera”, disse Hausfather, e também confirma que o mundo caminha para um aumento extremo do nível do mar e outros impactos climáticos extremos.
Tais efeitos são esperados com um aumento superior a 2ºC, e a temperatura global média já aumentou cerca de 1,2ºC.
