Um tatu-peba (Euphractus sexcintus) foi resgatado por populares na manhã desta quinta-feira (8), na Avenida Roosevelt, no Centro de Dracena (SP).
Ao G1, uma das pessoas que ajudaram no resgate disse que o animal estava escondido em um buraco de terra em uma calçada, em frente a uma loja.
“Perguntei brincando ao dono da loja se ele estava fazendo reforma e foi quando ele disse que um senhor havia passado na frente do estabelecimento e dito que o buraco na terra teria sido feito por um tatu e que o animal estaria dentro do buraco”, contou ao G1.
O morador de Dracena, que já tinha visto familiares fazerem o resgate de tatus, utilizou água para retirar o animal. Dois baldes de água foram jogados no buraco, até que o bicho saísse.
A Polícia Militar Ambiental foi acionada e levou o animal, que foi solto no bairro rural Canta Galo, em Dracena.
Ainda segundo a polícia, o tatu-peba mantinha as características de animal selvagem e não possuía sinais de domesticação.

Função ecológica de peso
O tatu-peba mede de 40 a 95 centímetros e pode pesar entre 3,2 e 6,5 quilos. Seu nome é popular e generalista. Tatu vem do tupi. E, claro, se refere à sua carapaça óssea e protetora (ta = duro; tu = espesso). Dizem que nem um veículo, ao atropelá-lo, consegue perfurar a armadura.
Mas o bichinho sofre mesmo por ser muito caçado por causa da carne. Poucos sabem, mas os tatus têm atribuições importantes na natureza. Este mamífero tem função ecológica de peso, pois é capaz de se alimentar de insetos, contribuindo para o equilíbrio de populações de formigas e cupins.
No Brasil, existem oito gêneros e 21 espécies conhecidas de tatu. Todas são originárias das Américas e pertencentes à mesma família, a Dasypodidae. O tatu-peba (também conhecido como tatu-peludo) tem coloração amarronzada e a carapaça é provida de pelos esparsos.
É um animal notívago, solitário e onívoro. A toca é cavada com uma profundidade de aproximadamente dois metros, geralmente nos campos mais áridos. Às vezes, ele causa grandes prejuízos à lavoura, pois se alimenta de brotos de milho e outras plantas. O tatu-peba vive cerca de 18 anos.
A espécie está distribuída no Suriname, no leste dos Andes e no norte da Argentina. No Brasil, ocorre quase no país inteiro.
O período de gestação vai de 60 a 65 dias e os filhotes atingem a maturidade aos nove meses.
