O Facebook poderá ser obrigado a vender a sua plataforma de GIFs depois de uma investigação no Reino Unido. A autoridade de concorrência do país afirmou nesta quinta-feira (12) que o acordo entre as empresas pode prejudicar o mercado de publicidade gráfica.
O Giphy, site que permite criar e compartilhar GIFs, foi comprado em maio de 2020 pelo Facebook, que pretendia integrá-lo com o Instagram. O negócio foi avaliado em US$ 400 milhões pelo site “Axios”.
Em janeiro de 2021, a Autoridade de Concorrência e Mercados do Reino Unido (CMA, na sigla em inglês) abriu uma investigação sobre o acordo. Em abril, o órgão determinou que a transação passasse por uma investigação aprofundada.
“A aquisição do Giphy pode fazer com que o Facebook retire GIFs de plataformas concorrentes ou exija mais dados do usuário para acessá-los. Isso também remove um potencial desafiador para o Facebook”, afirmou o presidente da investigação independente para o CMA, Stuart McIntosh.

Na investigação, o órgão britânico para concorrência descobriu que, antes da aquisição pelo Facebook, a Giphy planejava ampliar seus serviços de publicidade paga nos Estados Unidos para outros países, como o Reino Unido.
Depois do acordo com a empresa de Mark Zuckerberg, o Giphy encerrou as parcerias de publicidade, de acordo com o CMA.
“Discordamos das conclusões preliminares da CMA, que não acreditamos serem apoiadas por evidências”, disse um porta-voz do Facebook. “Como demonstramos, esta fusão é do melhor interesse das pessoas e empresas no Reino Unido – e em todo o mundo”.
O porta-voz acrescentou que o Facebook continuará trabalhando com o CMA. O Giphy não comentou a decisão.
