A orca Tahlequah, também conhecida como J35, está prenha mais uma vez. É o que disseram no domingo (28) os pesquisadores do Southall Environmental Associates (SEA) nos Estados Unidos. Em 2018, ela emocionou o mundo por ter carregado, durante mais de duas semanas, seu filhote morto pelo oceano.

Duas fotos tiradas por pesquisadores da instituição registraram uma mudança no corpo de Tahlequah entre setembro de 2019 e julho de 2020. Segundo os biólogos da instituição, o aumento na região abdominal indica que ela pode estar próxima de dar à luz.
As imagens fazem parte de um projeto da instituição que acompanha a migração dos animais marinhos com o uso de drones. Os pesquisadores identificaram também que há outras orcas no grupo de Tahlequah que estão prenha, em uma gestação que pode durar entre 17 e 18 meses.

Grupo corre perigo de extinção
As orcas que vivem na costa norte-americana correm risco de extinção. Para alimentação, elas dependem do salmão-rei, espécie que está em declínio. A comunidade da futura mamãe tem cerca de 73 indivíduos e é frequentemente encontrada perto da ilha de Vancouver, no Canadá.
Pesquisas indicam que só cerca de um terço das orcas nascidas nos últimos 20 anos sobrevivem. Segundo o centro, nenhuma gravidez nos últimos três anos produziu um filhote que tenha sobrevivido. A maior parte das mortes se dá por conta da falta de alimentação.
Ken Balcomb, diretor do Center for Whale Research disse que espera que a situação estimule uma mudança fundamental. Ele defende a derrubada de represas no rio Lower Snake, nos EUA, para aumentar as migração do salmão, alimento natural das orcas.
