O departamento nacional de clima dos Estados Unidos, o National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), informou que o La Niña, fenômeno climático oposto ao El niño, entrou em atividade nesta sexta-feira (11). A principal característica do fenômeno é o resfriamento da superfície das águas do Oceano Pacífico.
Para o La Niña ser considerado ativo, as águas do Pacífico precisam ficar mais geladas que o normal por um tempo prolongado. Este resfriamento já vem acontecendo há nove meses, porém de maneira leve.
Segundo a Organização Meteorológica Mundial (OMM), agência da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU), a previsão é de que o La Niña de 2020 dure até novembro e que seja de baixa intensidade. A OMM estima que, mesmo com o fenômeno, este ano deve ser um dos anos mais quentes da história.

As regiões Norte e Nordeste tendem a ficar mais chuvosas durante a ocorrência do La Niña, enquanto que as chuvas ficam menos frequentes no Sul.
Outra característica do fenômeno no Brasil é deixar as temperaturas mais amenas e o clima mais seco no Sudeste e no Centro-Oeste.

Segundo pesquisadores da Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Embrapa), o La Niña poderá ocasionar uma das maiores estiagens no Pantanal nos últimos 30 anos. A seca no Centro-Oeste, por sua vez, poderá agravar os incêndios no bioma, que já consumiram mais de 10% do Pantanal em 2020.
Mudanças no mundo
Na América do Norte, o La Niña costuma a deixar o clima mais quente e seco no sul dos Estados Unidos, o que ajuda a explicar a onda de incêndios florestais que está ocorrendo na Califórnia. Em contrapartida, as temperaturas ficam mais frias no sudeste do Alasca, nas planícies do norte e no oeste, assim como no centro do Canadá.

As chuvas sazonais poderão ficar abaixo do normal entre setembro a novembro no Chifre da África e na África Austral, na região central da América do Norte e em todo o Pacífico ocidental e sudeste (região que inclui costa Oeste dos Estados Unidos e da América Latina)
O último La Niña ocorreu entre novembro de 2017 e abril de 2018. Sua intensidade foi de fraca a moderada.
