Um grupo de voluntários do Reino Unido começou o ano de 2020 já com uma grande surpresa: eles encontraram uma foca presa nas rochas da ilha de Saint Mary, próxima à cidade de Whitley Bay, e tiveram que trabalhar muito para tirá-la dali. A foto do animal esperando resgate dentro de uma fenda entre rochas viralizou nas redes sociais.
A foca foi encontrada só com a cabeça para fora do buraco e, segundo os voluntários que a ajudaram, ela estava realmente em apuros. O resgate veio de membros da ONG britânica “St. Mary’s Seal Watch”, que se dedica a cuidar dos animais na pequena ilha. O aviso veio de um funcionário do farol.

Eles relataram o caso em sua conta do Facebook:
“Normalmente, quando focas se encontram presas, elas conseguem se virar sozinhas para sair. Mas essa pobrezinha estava muito e realmente presa”, explicam no post.
“É provável que, tendo se assustado e, tentando atravessar as rochas de onde estava descansando, aquele filhote julgou mal o buraco que estava tentando atravessar e deslizou para trás. Quando foi encontrado, ele estava apenas com a cabeça fora do buraco.” – St. Mary’s Seal Watch

O resgate
Segundo o relato, mesmo focas jovens podem ser bem pesadas e ter dentes afiados. Portanto, os voluntários não podiam simplesmente puxá-la para fora. “Isso poderia fazer mal tanto para a foca quanto para nós”, contam.
Então, primeiro eles colocaram objetos dentro do buraco para evitar que o animal afundasse ainda mais. Em seguida, era preciso levantá-lo de forma sutil. Eles também prenderam a mandíbula do animal para evitar que a foca mordesse os voluntários. Assim, conseguiram erguê-la gentilmente.
“Por sorte, essa pequenina foi encontrada logo e, com os voluntários em campo, conseguimos resgatá-la rapidamente”, dizem.
