As ilhas Fiji, cuja economia depende muito do turismo, desejam criar uma “bolha” livre de coronavírus nesta área do Pacífico para receber viajantes da Austrália e Nova Zelândia, cujos habitantes eram seus principais clientes antes da pandemia.
A “bolha Bula” – “olá” em fijiano – oferecerá aos turistas desses países uma área VIP quando eles descerem do avião e os transportarem para uma praia isolada.
Canberra e Wellington começaram as discussões em maio para criar sua própria “bolha” comum, onde as restrições de viagem impostas pela COVID-19 nos dois lados do mar da Tasmânia seriam suspensas, com a ideia de estendê-la às ilhas do Pacífico.
No entanto, os deslocamentos internos ainda são restritos na Austrália, onde surgiram novos surtos perto de Melbourne e parece improvável que o mar possa ser atravessado antes de setembro.
“Enquanto a Austrália e a Nova Zelândia projetam sua ‘bolha’, o mesmo ou até maior sucesso de Fiji no combate ao coronavírus nos coloca em posição de abrir uma via no Pacífico”, disse o primeiro-ministro Frank Bainimarama.
– “Desfrutar das Fiji” -“A ‘bolha Bula’ permitirá que australianos e neozelandeses aproveitem o melhor que Fiji tem a oferecer, mantendo-os afastados de outros viajantes e da população”, afirmou.
As medidas de quarentena para visitantes negativos de países que Fiji considera ter controlado a COVID-19 seriam removidas, acrescentou ele sem fornecer mais detalhes.
Fiji, com uma população de 930.000 habitantes, foi um dos primeiros países a controlar o coronavírus.
O arquipélago afirmou em 5 de junho que havia erradicado a doença após 45 dias sem novos casos e registrou oficialmente 18 infecções confirmadas (curadas) desde o início de março, sem mortes.
Mas a reabertura de fronteiras representa o risco de uma reintrodução do vírus, apesar das precauções tomadas.
“O setor quer fronteiras abertas, mas todo mundo sabe que a ameaça do coronavírus é real”, disse Fantasha Lockington, diretora da Associação de Hotéis e Turismo de Fiji (FHTA), que espera ansiosamente saber “quando tudo voltará a funcionar e como se preparar”.
Desde março, os turistas pararam de chegar às praias paradisíacas e dezenas de milhares de habitantes locais estão desempregados.
O turismo representa 40% da economia, diz o governo. E com atividades indiretas 60%, estima o FHTA. As autoridades temem uma contração da economia de mais de 20%.
Lockington considera que 98% dos profissionais do turismo perdeu o emprego.
A empresa Fiji Airways reduziu pela metade sua força de trabalho devido à falta de faturamento.
Para muitos habitantes, o turismo é vital, ajudando a superar desastres naturais e o declínio das indústrias de açúcar e vestuário.
“Gostaríamos que as fronteiras fossem abertas em breve para que todos voltassem ao trabalho”, disse Ben Danford, um guia turístico que tem trabalhado na agricultura.
