Encontrar no terreno de casa um fóssil de um animal pré-histórico é um privilégio para poucos. Fernando Turelli teve essa experiência. Ele conta que ao usar uma máquina para limpar uma estrada acabou descobrindo os fósseis.
A fazenda fica em Angatuba, na região de Itapetininga, uma área considerada berço paleontológico por ter registros de centenas de milhões de anos. Diferentes fósseis foram catalogados por pesquisadores que trabalham no local, entre eles fragmentos de conchas com mais de 260 milhões de anos, sinal de que Angatuba já esteve debaixo d’água. Também há marcas deixadas por organismos invertebrados que não existem mais.
A paleontóloga Miriam Pacheco explica que, embora as pegadas dos dinossauros sejam muito famosas, outros organismos até mais antigos deixaram suas marcas.

Muitos fazendeiros da região nem imaginam que debaixo dos pés deles há muita história para ser preservada. São pelo menos 5 sítios paleontológicos. A maior parte dos fósseis de Angatuba foi encontrada na zona rural.
A quase 10 quilômetros de centro de Angatuba fica outra fazenda onde foram encontrados fósseis. Na década de 1970, era uma pedreira de onde se extraia calcário. No local foram descobertos fósseis de um mesossauro, um réptil aquático que viveu há mais de 270 milhões de anos e que entrou em extinção. Muitos exemplares estão em universidades e museus. Mas na época, alguns foram retirados ilegalmente do país.
Miriam diz que, caso o proprietário rural suspeite que haja nas terras esse tipo de material, deve entrar em contato com uma instituição de ensino e pesquisa mais próxima.
As descobertas abrem várias possibilidades, entre elas a do turismo geológico. O proprietário rural João Lopes Neto sabe da importância de preservar toda a área e ele espera que as descobertas atraiam pessoas interessadas no assunto e que o turismo seja uma fonte de geração de empregos.
