A tartaruga gigante que é considerada a salvadora de sua espécie — graças a sua extraordinária libido — vai agora se aposentar, retornando à vida selvagem em sua ilha de origem.

Diego, como é chamado, estava entre os 14 machos selecionados para um programa de acasalamento de tartarugas na ilha de Santa Cruz, no arquipélago de Galápagos.
O programa foi considerado bem-sucedido, produzindo mais de 2 mil tartarugas gigantes desde seu início, ainda nos anos 1960, e o apetite sexual de Diego foi crucial para isso.
Agora com cem anos de idade, Diego ajudou a produzir centenas de filhotes — segundo algumas estimativas, esse número talvez chegue a 800.
Com o programa concluído, Diego vai retornar em março para sua ilha nativa, Española, segundo informou o serviço de Parques Nacionais de Galápagos (PNG).
Assim, ele vai se somar a uma população de 1,8 mil tartarugas, das quais ao menos 40% são suas descendentes diretas.
“Ele contribuiu com uma grande porcentagem da linhagem que estamos devolvendo a Española”, afirmou Jorge Carrion, diretor do PNG, à agência France Presse.
“Estamos felizes com a possibilidade de devolver essa tartaruga a seu habitat natural.”
Diego é um Chelonoidis hoodensis, espécie encontrada na natureza apenas nessa ilha ao sul do arquipélago de Galápagos, no Pacífico.
O arquipélago, a 900 km da costa do Equador, ficou famoso mundialmente por ter sido palco de estudos do naturalista inglês Charles Darwin, autor da Teoria da Evolução, graças a sua grande e peculiar biodiversidade.

Calcula-se que Diego tenha sido retirado de Galápagos cerca de 80 anos atrás, por uma expedição científica que o levou ao Zoológico de San Diego, nos EUA.
Cerca de 50 anos atrás, sobravam apenas 2 machos e 12 fêmeas de sua espécie em Española. Para ajudar no programa de repovoamento, Diego foi identificado como um dos últimos remanescentes entre os Chelonoidis hoodensis e levado de volta para a Estação de Pesquisas Charles Darwin, em Galápagos, em 1977.
