O Ministério do Meio Ambiente realizou mudanças em sua estrutura, criando ou renomeando secretarias. Segundo o ministério, as mudanças buscam reduzir a hierarquia e aumentar a eficiência da gestão ambiental.
A reestruturação, publicada no Diário Oficial da União, prevê que:
A Secretaria de Política Internacional vai virar a Secretaria de Clima e Relações Internacionais, com o Departamento de Clima; e o Departamento de Relações Internacionais.
O Departamento de Ecoturismo vai virar a Secretaria de Áreas Protegidas e a Secretaria de Florestas vai virar a Secretaria da Amazônia e Serviços Ambientais:
O decreto prevê que parte da nova estrutura vai tratar de temas como:
a mudança do clima;
o combate à desertificação; e
a proteção da camada de ozônio;
Ou seja, assuntos entre os quais há muita pressão de investidores estrangeiros e brasileiros para o governo federal melhorar a gestão.
Além disso, foi criado um órgão para cuidar da defesa de animais em situação de risco, incluindo animais domésticos, como cães e gatos.
A nova estrutura entra em vigor a partir do dia 21 de setembro, mas já é alvo de críticas.

Há preocupação também com que chamaram de desmonte do quadro de servidores técnicos que se aposentaram.
