O S&P 500 e o Dow Jones sofreram suas maiores quedas percentuais diárias desde o final de outubro. As ações em Wall Street fecharam em forte queda nesta segunda-feira (4), afastando-se de picos históricos no primeiro dia de negociação do ano, com o apetite por risco diminuindo em meio à expectativa pelo segundo turno nas eleições na Geórgia e ao aumento persistente de casos de coronavírus.
O Dow Jones caiu 1,25%, para 30.223,89 pontos. O S&P 500 recuou 1,48%, para 3.700,65 pontos. E o Nasdaq Composite perdeu 1,47%, para 12.698,45 pontos.

O S&P 500 e o Dow sofreram suas maiores quedas percentuais diárias desde o final de outubro, enquanto o Nasdaq teve sua maior perda desde 9 de dezembro.
O Dow Jones, que atingiu uma pontuação máxima recorde no início da sessão, mesmo movimento do S&P 500, também foi puxado para baixo por uma queda de 5,3% nas ações da Boeing Co, depois que Bernstein cortou sua recomendação para “abaixo da média do mercado”, citando preocupações sobre o fluxo de caixa.
Todos os três principais índices atingiram mínimas em duas semanas.
Enquanto isso, o destino da agenda do presidente eleito dos EUA, Joe Biden –que inclui reforma do código tributário e impulso a estímulos e gastos com infraestrutura– depende firmemente das disputas de terça-feira para o Senado no Estado da Geórgia, que determinará o controle da Casa.
O índice de volatilidade VIX, termômetro do medo de Wall Street, saltou 18,2% e fechou no maior patamar desde 5 de novembro.
“As ações estão caindo depois de um ano impressionante de ganhos”, disse Brian Reynolds, estrategista-chefe de mercado da Reynolds Strategy.
“Estamos começando (o ano) com um vírus fora de controle. Provavelmente terminaremos 2021 com um vírus que poderia estar sob controle nessa época. Como chegaremos do início ao fim será repleto de retrocessos frequentes, porque as pessoas estarão olhando para as notícias de curto prazo”, acrescentou.
O total de mortes nos EUA por Covid-19 superou 350 mil.
