Um grupo de três orcas, mamíferos marinhos em risco de extinção, foi avistado no estreito de Messina, algo inédito neste braço de mar entre a península italiana e a Sicília, anunciou a associação Marecamp neste domingo no Facebook.
Os animais seriam os mesmos observados por vários dias em frente ao porto de Gênova (Noroeste do país) e parecem “ter percorrido 800 km em uma semana”, explicou à agência AFP Clara Monaco, bióloga marinha de Marecamp.

Nesta sexta, elas foram avistadas por Simone Vartuli, um pescador esportivo de 25 anos que pode se aproximar delas enquanto navegada em seu barco pelo estreito.
“No começo, fiquei com medo, porque são animais enormes, mas fiquei quase uma hora com elas e acabei ficando muito perto, a aproximadamente um metro”, disse à AFP.

“Não se sabe se desceram até a Sicília para encontrar alimentos ou para viajar para o estreito de Gibraltar e depois ao oceano e à Islândia”, disse Clara Monaco.
Segundo a bióloga, o fato de se encontrarem no estreito representa um problema devido ao intenso tráfico marinho nessa área, pelo risco de colisão com as embarcações. Mesmo assim, apontou que era importante não se aproximar muito desses mamíferos, porque eles estão “muito estressados”.
As orcas podem ser observadas em todos os oceanos e mares do planeta, mas geralmente se concentram nas regiões mais frias.
Além das orcas, o Mediterrâneo abriga ao todo 11 espécies de cetáceos, diversas consideradas vulneráveis.
