Um par de luvas de boxe usado por Nelson Mandela no auge da luta contra o apartheid na África do Sul jaz sob uma camada espessa de pó em um quarto escuro, cujo silêncio só é rompido pelo choque de mariposas no mostruário de vidro.
As luvas já foram um dos itens em exposição mais populares do Museu do Apartheid de Johanesburgo, uma de dezenas de atrações históricas e galerias de arte do país forçadas a fechar as portas devido ao impacto da pandemia de Covid-19.

“Tivemos que dispensar todos os funcionários. Cerca de 30 pessoas. Não há ninguém aqui para acender e apagar as luzes”, disse o diretor do museu, Christopher Till.
Ele usou o celular como lanterna para mostrar algumas das centenas de obras de arte e artefatos que ilustram a história da longa luta contra o controle da minoria branca: “Não podemos nos dar o luxo de perder este lugar”, disse.
Antes da pandemia, o museu recebia até mil visitantes por dia, a maioria turistas estrangeiros. Como outras instituições culturais, ele teve que fechar em março de 2020, quando a África do Sul impôs seu primeiro lockdown contra a Covid-19.
O museu reabriu em janeiro de 2021, mas como não vendeu ingressos durante 10 meses e teve muito poucos visitantes devido ao surto em andamento, ficou muito privado de fundos para funcionar e voltou a fechar em março.
Sem turistas por causa do vírus, e sem visitas escolares, uma grande fonte de renda, por causa das restrições, várias outras instituições culturais estão à mercê de um destino semelhante — entre eles o Teatro Fugard da Cidade do Cabo, a Galeria de Arte de Johanesburgo e a casa de Mandela no município de Soweto.
Até esta sexta-feira (7), o país havia registrado mais de 1,59 milhão de casos do coronavírus. Mais de 54 mil pessoas morreram devido à doença.
