Cientistas descobriram que algumas espécies de algas no litoral da Escócia, Irlanda e França sobreviveram a mudanças de clima no planeta desde 16 mil anos atrás.
Especialistas da universidade de Heriot-Watt analisaram o material genético de algas de 14 partes do oceano Atlântico.

A equipe encontrou três grupos genéticos distintos.
Espera-se que a descoberta ajude a mostrar como a vida marinha consegue sobreviver a mudanças extremas no clima.
O ecologista marinho Andrew Want coletou amostras em Kirkwall, cidade na ilha de Orkney, no extremo norte da Escócia. Ele diz que “populações refugiadas” conseguiram se manter “apesar de mudanças dramáticas” no clima.

“Algas na Escócia e Irlanda são mais proximamente relacionadas às populações do Ártico do que às da região da Bretanha (no oeste da França)”, disse Want, que trabalha no campus da Heriot-Watt na ilha de Orkney.
“Na medida em que as camadas de gelo se retraíram no litoral norte da Europa no final da mais recente era do gelo, a distribuição de algas seguiu e recolonizou as latitudes maiores do Atlântico.”
“A alga tem um papel fundamental no Atlântico então é importante entender o que afeta a sua distribuição e sobrevivência ao longo do tempo e o quão sensível ela é a mudanças.”
A equipe de pesquisas, que inclui cientistas na França e Portugal, encontrou um grupo genético distinto no leste do Canadá e dos Estados Unidos.
Outro grupo foi encontrado ao longo do norte e centro da Europa. Um terceiro grupo foi achado na região da Bretanha, no oeste da França.
Want diz que a população da Bretanha pode vir a desaparecer com os atuais cenários de mudanças climáticas.
As descobertas foram publicadas no European Journal of Phycology.
“Nosso estudo mostra que organismos marinhos se ajustam a mudanças climáticas ao migrar para os polos e até atravessando o Atlântico em condições que são favoráveis”, afirmou o dr. João Neiva, do Centro de Ciências Marinhas do Algarve, em Portugal.
“Essas migrações criam um mecanismo pelo qual a vida marinha protege o efeito das mudanças climáticas globais, e como elas conseguem compensar pelas contrações previsíveis de limites mais quentes na medida que a crise moderna do clima de desenvolve.”
