O iate restaurado do ex-líder iugoslavo Josip Broz Tito está sendo convertido em um hotel e um museu dedicado à história turbulenta da embarcação, que passou de transportadora de banana a ponto de encontro de estadistas mundiais.
Ancorado no porto adriático de Rijeka, na Croácia, o Galeb (gaivota, em português) será aberto ao público em sua nova função no próximo ano.

O navio foi construído em 1938 na Itália para transportar bananas da África. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, foi usado primeiro pela Marinha italiana e depois pelos alemães e afundado por aviões aliados no final da guerra.
Na Iugoslávia comunista, foi recuperado e transformado em um iate usado por Tito em suas muitas viagens pelo mundo.

Durante esse tempo, Galeb recebeu mais de 70 estadistas — reis, presidentes e primeiros-ministros — e desempenhou um papel importante para o Movimento dos Países Não-Alinhados durante a era da Guerra Fria.
Tito morreu em 1980 e após o colapso da Iugoslávia nas guerras dos Bálcãs na década de 1990, Galeb enferrujou até que a cidade de Rijeka decidiu comprá-lo.
“Espero que o navio seja concluído para seu novo propósito no primeiro semestre de 2021”, disse o prefeito de Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel, à Reuters.
