A mais de 3,5 mil quilômetros do continente americano, a população da Ilha de Páscoa — território do Chile no meio do Pacífico — enfrenta com disciplina a pandemia do novo coronavírus. Com ao menos dois casos confirmados, a Covid-19 obrigou a ilha a se confinar e fechar todos os seus acessos, enquanto olha com preocupação para um futuro sem turistas.

Até a publicação desta reportagem, a ilha com 7.750 habitantes registrava apenas dois casos confirmados e outros dois ou três em análise. Porém, o território chileno conta com um único hospital, que possui somente três respiradores artificiais.
Embora as autoridades locais acreditem que a expansão do vírus está praticamente contida, há o temor das consequências da redução abrupta no turismo.

Cerca de 100 mil visitantes chegavam em média anualmente à Ilha de Páscoa, atraídos principalmente pelos moai — estruturas de pedra perpetradas no território cuja construção ainda é um mistério.
O governo local se adiantou e fechou a entrada da ilha uma semana antes do decreto das autoridades em Santiago, após o primeiro caso em 11 de março, a poucos dias de se registrarem contágios no resto do Chile. No país, os contágios superaram os 2,7 mil nesta quarta-feira (1º)
Há uma semana, uma quarentena total e um toque de recolher extenso estão em vigor na ilha desde as 14h até as 5h da madrugada. As medidas de confinamento foram estendidas na terça-feira por mais duas semanas.

No entanto, todos temem o futuro dos próximos meses. Segundo o prefeito da ilha, Pedro Edmunds, os habitantes podem sobreviver por volta de um mês com a ilha fechada.
Porém, no final de abril, cerca de 3 mil pessoas “se encontrarão nas ruas implorando comida a alguma autoridade local ou nacional, porque não terão como sobreviver”, alertou Edmunds.
A pandemia revelou a fragilidade da Ilha de Páscoa. Sem subsídios estatais, muitos podem não sobreviver, enfatiza o prefeito.
Edmunds calcula que a recuperação começaria a ocorrer em agosto, em parte devido à eventual chegada de turistas. No entanto, a atividade turística deve ser mais lenta do que a de três semanas atrás, com dois voos diários da companhia aérea LATAM.
O desafio à frente é melhorar a infraestrutura e “voltar a encantar as pessoas para que possam voltar”, disse Sabrina Tuki, dedicada ao turismo da ilha há 20 anos.
