Seis integrantes da agência de inteligência militar russa GRU foram acusados formalmente nos Estados Unidos por ataques cibernéticos globais, incluindo contra a rede elétrica da Ucrânia, as eleições na França em 2017 e os Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno em 2018, anunciou nesta segunda-feira (19) o Departamento de Justiça americano.
De acordo com o procurador-geral adjunto dos EUA John Demers, esses ataques cibernéticos são os “mais destrutivos e preocupantes atribuídos a um só grupo”.
Os seis integrantes da GRU também foram acusados de organizar um ataque de malware denominado “NotPetya”, que em junho de 2017 infectou computadores de empresas de todo o mundo, causando perdas de quase US$ 1 bilhão.
Os ataques tinham como alvo questões estratégicas ou políticas sobre a Rússia e outros países:
A Ucrânia, que teve a rede elétrica ameaçada, vive em conflito com os russos desde 2014, com a anexação da Crimeia e a tomada do leste ucraniano por separatistas pró-Moscou.
O candidato Emmanuel Macron, posteriormente eleito, por suas posições mais contundentes pró-União Europeia e crítica a Moscou.
Os organizadores dos Jogos Olímpicos pelo banimento a atletas da Rússia envolvidos em um esquema de doping com patrocínio estatal.
Ainda sobre os Jogos Olímpicos, o Escritório de Relações Exteriores do Reino Unido disse nesta segunda que a GRU tentou atingir a organização da Olimpíada de Tóquio, adiada para o ano que vem. A Wada, entidade responsável pelas ações contra o doping, pediu a exclusão da Rússia da competição.
Nenhum dos seis integrantes acusados está em custódia — e é improvável que haja prisões, uma vez que eles não estão nos EUA. O objetivo do governo americano é tentar passar uma mensagem de alerta sobre tentativas de ciberataques patrocinadas por países.
Outros ataques
Os investigadores também identificaram que os agentes tentaram prejudicar o inquérito sobre o envenenamento do ex-agente duplo russo Sergei Skripal e sua filha. Os acusados também teriam atacado meios de comunicação e o Parlamento da Geórgia.
Demers disse que membros da mesma unidade da GRU foram acusados anteriormente de tentar interferir nas eleições americanas de 2016, mas que “não havia alegações de interferência eleitoral” nesta acusação.
