De acordo com as novas previsões meteorológicas publicadas pela Organização Meteorológica Mundial (OMM), durante o período 2020-2024, quase todas as regiões, exceto algumas áreas oceânicas do sul, terão temperaturas mais altas do que as atuais.
As condições climáticas serão mais úmidas do que nos últimos anos nas altas latitudes do planeta e no Sahel e provavelmente mais secas no norte e leste da América do Sul.
Ventos mais fortes a oeste ocorrerão no norte do Atlântico Norte, causando mais tempestades na Europa Ocidental.
Devido às atividades humanas, o planeta já ganhou pelo menos 1°C desde os anos 1850-1900, e as catástrofes climáticas se multiplicaram. Os últimos cinco anos foram os mais quentes já registrados.
A temperatura média global deve permanecer acima de pelo menos 1°C até 2024, de acordo com a OMM. E a probabilidade de exceder os níveis pré-industriais em 1,5°C por pelo menos um desses cinco anos é de 20%.
No entanto, é extremamente “improvável” que a temperatura média de cinco anos para o período 2020-2024 esteja acima de 1,5°C.
Essas previsões não levam em consideração as mudanças nas emissões de gases de efeito estufa registradas durante o confinamento imposto para conter a pandemia da Covid-19.
Segundo o secretário-geral da OMM, Petteri Taalas, a redução nas emissões de CO2 este ano não deve levar a uma diminuição nas concentrações atmosféricas de CO2, que são a causa do aumento da temperatura global. “A OMM indicou em várias ocasiões que a desaceleração industrial e econômica causada pela Covid-19 não pode substituir uma ação sustentável e coordenada em favor do clima”, disse.
Até 2020, a OMM estima que as grandes áreas terrestres do hemisfério norte terão temperaturas acima de 0,8°C.
O aquecimento no Ártico provavelmente será mais do que o dobro da média mundial neste ano.
Muitas regiões da América do Sul, África Austral e Austrália terão condições mais secas do que nos últimos anos.
A pandemia do novo coronavírus “causou uma séria crise econômica e de saúde global, mas se não combatermos as mudanças climáticas, o bem-estar humano, os ecossistemas e as economias poderão ser ameaçados por séculos”, alertou Petteri Taalas.
