Uma jovem baleia separada de sua mãe e perdida no rio Tâmisa, perto de Londres, no Reino Unido, teve de ser sacrificada, devido a uma deterioração de seu estado, disseram as equipes de resgate nesta terça-feira (11).

Na madrugada de segunda-feira, as equipes de resgate desbloquearam o filhote da baleia-de-minke, que estava encalhado em uma zona de eclusas para controlar o fluxo de água no sudoeste de Londres.
O animal conseguiu escapar, quando estava sendo direcionado para uma parte mais profunda do rio e começou a subir o Tâmisa, em vez de nadar em direção ao mar.
“O estado da baleia se deteriorou nos últimos 45 minutos em que estivemos com ela”, disse a coordenadora nacional de resgate da British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), Julia Cable, na segunda-feira à noite.
“Não estava respirando bem e não teria sobrevivido por muito mais tempo”, acrescentou, observando que os veterinários do Zoológico de Londres administraram uma anestesia reforçada no cetáceo, que havia se separado de sua mãe.
O filhote, que media entre três e quatro metros de comprimento, mostrava um “comportamento preocupante” a ponto de “especialistas presentes temerem que ele não estivesse bem de saúde”, disse no domingo uma porta-voz do Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI).
A baleia-de-minke é uma das menores espécies de baleia. Ela costuma alcançar dez metros de comprimento na idade adulta e vive no norte dos oceanos Atlântico e Pacífico. Também foi encontrada em lugares tão distantes quanto o Ártico e o equador.
Em janeiro de 2006, uma grande baleia encalhou no rio Tâmisa, o que gerou enorme interesse. Ela morreu, enquanto era devolvida ao mar.
