O japonês vencedor do Prêmio Nobel de Física Isamu Akasaki, recompensado em 2014 por ser o pioneiro em iluminação LED com eficiência energética, uma arma contra as mudanças climáticas e a pobreza, morreu aos 92 anos, informou a universidade onde lecionava nesta sexta-feira (02).
Akasaki ganhou o prestigioso prêmio ao lado de dois outros cientistas, Hiroshi Amano e Shuji Nakamura. Juntos, eles desenvolveram o diodo emissor de luz azul, descrito como uma invenção “revolucionária” pelo júri do Nobel.
O cientista morreu de pneumonia na quinta-feira de manhã em um hospital da cidade de Nagoya, segundo um comunicado no site da Universidade Meijo, onde Akasaki foi professor.
A tecnologia LED dura milhares de horas e consome apenas uma fração da energia em comparação com a lâmpada incandescente criada por Thomas Edison no século XIX.
Os diodos vermelho e verde já existem há muito tempo, mas o surgimento de um LED azul foi essencial, pois as três cores devem ser misturadas para recriar a luz branca do sol.
O trio de pesquisadores deu um grande passo na década de 1990, após três longas décadas de trabalho árduo, quando conseguiu obter raios azuis brilhantes de semicondutores.
