Um novo estudo da agência científica nacional da Austrália (CSIRO) e publicado na revista “Frontiers in Marine Science” estimou que existam 14,4 milhões de toneladas de microplásticos no fundo do oceano – 30 vezes mais plástico do que na superfície.

A equipe usou um submarino robótico para coletar, em 2017, amostras de sedimentos do fundo do mar em seis locais remotos a cerca de 300 km da costa sul do país, na Grande Baía da Austrália.
Os pesquisadores analisaram 51 amostras e descobriram que cada grama de sedimento continha uma média de 1,26 pedaço de microplástico. Isso é até 25 vezes mais microplásticos do que estudos anteriores em águas profundas, segundo os pesquisadores.

Ao jornal “The Guardian”, a coautora da pesquisa Denise Hardesty disse que o estudo mostra que o plástico está em todos os lugares, mesmo nos mais remotos. “Isso nos dá uma pausa para pensar sobre o mundo em que vivemos e o impacto de nossos hábitos de consumo.”
Originários de fontes diversas como roupas sintéticas, pneus e tintas, esses pedaços minúsculos de plástico têm 5 mm ou menos de diâmetro e são o resultado da quebra de plásticos maiores.
As amostras foram coletadas em março e abril de 2017 em uma faixa de profundidades entre 1.655 metros e 3.062 metros.
