O número de turistas no mundo caiu 65% no primeiro semestre de 2020, representando uma perda de 440 milhões de chegadas internacionais e um prejuízo de cerca de US$ 460 bilhões (o equivalente a cerca de R$ 2,5 trilhões) em receitas de exportação do turismo internacional, segundo a Organização Mundial de Turismo (OMT).
Apesar da reabertura gradual de alguns destinos, permitida desde maio, “a perda do setor foi cinco vezes a perda na receita do turismo internacional registrada em 2009 durante a crise econômica e financeira global”, informou a organização em nota.

Em 2019 a OMT contabilizou 1,5 bilhão de chegadas de turistas internacionais: naquele ano o crescimento do número de viajantes no mundo desacelerou, caindo 4%. Em 2017 e em 2018, o número de turistas internacionais teve alta: 7% e 6%, respectivamente.
Ásia e o Pacífico foram as regiões que sofreram o maior impacto, com diminuição em 72% de chegadas de turistas, seguido pela Europa, com menos 66%. A África e o Oriente Médio tiveram uma queda de 57% nos visitantes, e as Américas, -55%.
Em comunicado, o secretário-geral da OMT, Zurab Pololikashvili, afirmou que “viagens internacionais seguras e responsáveis agora são possíveis em muitas partes do mundo, e é importante que os governos trabalhem em colaboração com o setor privado para fazer o turismo global funcionar novamente”.
Segundo a OMT, a queda no número de turistas é também uma consequência dos dois países com maior número de turistas internacionais, Estados Unidos e China, ainda não terem voltado ao fluxo normal de viagens.
A organização prevê que o turismo mundial chegará aos mesmos patamares de 2019, em termos de chegadas de turistas, no período de 2 a 4 anos. No ano de 2021, segundo a OMT, o aumento de viajantes vai depender da abertura gradual de restrições de viagens, a disponibilidade de uma vacina e o retorno da confiança do consumidor.
